2018 Chicago Flamenco Festival Kick-Off Concert
LAS GUITARRAS DE ESPAÑA
Las Guitarras de España presents: “The Chicago-Andalusian Music Project”
Chicago Tribune: “Las Guitarras adds jazz, rock, blues and everything else into the pot. The result is brilliant!”
The Chicago based ensemble Las Guitarras de España is pleased again to “Kick-Off” the 2018 Chicago Flamenco Festival presented by Instituto Cervantes at City Winery Chicago. The ensemble is in residence at the Instituto Cervantes with a mission to reach out to other cultures with diverse and original programs.
Chicago traditionally has been known as a home of jazz, blues, R&B and soul music. In recent years, the city has shed much of its gritty blue collar image and has become an international destination and meeting place for global artists of many styles. The music of Andalusia, Spain includes elements from many traditions (Middle Eastern, Indian, African) which blended together with existing music and dance traditions gave birth to “flamenco.”
One of the original visions of Las Guitarras de España was to create original works of music and dance by putting together Spanish guitar sounds with elements of jazz, blues, rock and soul sounds. The ensemble released 5 CDs between 2001 and 2011. Past and present members of Las Guitarras de España continue to compose and create music and dance with these materials in various projects.
On Monday February 19th, 2018, 7:30PM, City Winery Chicago, guitarists Carlo Basile and Diego Alonso will lead a cast of accomplished artists and composers performing all original works of Spanish guitar, Latin, & Jazz influenced music and dance. Joining the Spanish guitar duo will be Patricia Ortega (vocals) Chiara Mangiameli (flamenco dance/vocals), Colin Bunn (tres/ electric guitar), Greg Nergaard (bass), Kassandra Kocoshis (percussion), Javier Saume (drum kit), Victor Garcia (trumpet) and Ronnie Malley (oud, vocals).
