Matthew Sweet, Special guest Unibrow - 7/23
at City Winery Chicago
93XRT Welcomes Matthew Sweet
During a career that stretches back to the mid-’80s, Matthew Sweet has never followed trends, though his landmark 1991 album Girlfriend was responsible for starting one—its bone-dry, caterwauling sonics opening up a wild and picturesque new terrain for restless singer/songwriters to inhabit and explore. Two decades later, Sweet has once again swung for the fences—and connected—with the boldly experimental yet still deeply personal Modern Art.
Chicago is known for the music style called "power-pop" (Vercua Salt, Smashing Pumpkins, Cheap Trick), But the style has definitely been modified since Unibrow hit the Chicago scene. Consisting of Dan Fulkerson on guitar and vocals, Pablo Mena on bass and Bill Beam on Drums, these three can really bring it. Unibrow has played almost every music venue in the Chicago area, gaining new fans at each show. Some would consider Unibrow more on the heavier side of power-pop, even leaning toward "bubble-gum metal" or"stoner-pop". Which ever style you might think Unibrow plays, you'll definitely be entertained by the musicianship, and compositional originality Unibrow is known for.
