Mavis Staples w/Kelly Hogan - 11/24Saturday, November 24 2012 6:00pm Doors / 8:00pm Start Share: Facebook Twitter Pinterest
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and soul/gospel legend Mavis Staples delivers more wall-to-wall joy on her triumphant new Anti- album, You Are Not Alone (September 14), than any other release you're likely to hear this year.
Produced by fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy at Wilco's studio The Loft, the intimate and textured production showcases the iconic singer at her most powerful and fervent. You Are Not Alone mixes traditional gospel numbers with two new songs written for Mavis by Tweedy, plus her unique interpretations of songs by Pops Staples, Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis and Little Milton.
Mavis Staples is enjoying a major career resurgence, having become a festival favorite in recent years. This summer she played Lollapalooza and the Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival at Mass MoCa. Other recent festival performances include the Toronto Jazz Festival, Pocono Blues Festival (PA), Life Is Good Festival (MA), New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Newport Folk Festival 50, Singapore Grand Prix Carnival, Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Long Beach Blues Festival (CA), International Festival of Arts and Ideas, Tremblant International Blues Festival (Canada), Houston International Festival, Snowbird Tent Revival (UT), and many more.
Atlanta native Kelly Hogan is a beloved figure throughout the contemporary music landscape, and a multi-faceted artist whose warm southern persona and powerful voice have left their mark on countless recordings and live performances. On her new album, Hogan curates an ambitious and moving labor of love, mining the perfect intersection between classic pop, country and soul. Before this most recent solo project, Hogan sung in Neko Case’s band starting in 1998, as well as with Mavis Staples, Otis Clay and Andrew Bird within the last decade. She also had a weekly residency with her Jazz quartet, Kelly Hogan and the Wooden Leg, at the Hideout in Chicago. City Winery welcomes this versatile artist, recently touted by internationally renowned Chicago musician Andrew Bird as “a national treasure.”
