The Inaugural Jazz Gallery Rent Jam hosted by Roy Hargrove: "Rent Party"

Admission supports The Jazz Gallery

The Inaugural Jazz Gallery Rent Jam will be the first in a new series of jam sessions at City Winery supporting the The Jazz Gallery, a non-profit venue heralded as “the most imaginatively booked jazz club in New York” by the New York Times.

This series of late night jam sessions follows the CareFusion Festival's wildly successful Tribute to Herbie Hancock Jam Session this past June. The Jazz Gallery Rent Jam Sessions will be a quarterly series of events hosted and attended by some of the finest musicians in New York. The first event will be led by Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Roy Hargrove, and acclaimed artists Jason Moran and Ravi Coltrane will host subsequent sessions.

All proceeds from admission for this series will go towards supporting The Jazz Gallery. Additionally, all revenues will be matched; for every $15 ticket purchased, an anonymous donor will contribute an additional $15 dollars to The Jazz Gallery, resulting in a $30 total contribution. Additional matching donors are anticipated as the series unfolds.

Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments to participate in the jam session following a set from Hargrove and his ensemble. Special guests will be announced closer to the event – follow us on Twitter and Facebook  to be the first to hear details as they emerge!

The Inaugural Jazz Gallery Rent Jam will be held on Friday, October 8th at City Winery from 11:30pm to 2:30am. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to participate in a landmark musical event while supporting a unique and important non-profit international jazz cultural center.

ABOUT ROY HARGROVE

Two-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Roy Hargrove is not only a keeper of the flame of jazz tradition, he is also a pathbreaking stylist in a a variety of genres. He's made vital contributions in straight-ahead small-group jazz(hear 2008's Earfood), Afro-Cuban jazz(with his band Crisol), and R and hip-hop with his ever-evolving RH Factor. For years Roy has also developed an impassioned, refined voice in the big band idiom. The 19-piece Roy Hargrove Big Band was first established at the Jazz Gallery in 1995 and has played to enthusiastic crowds here as well as at Chicago's 2,300-seat Symphony Hall, the HarlemStage Gatehouse, Poughkeepsie's Bardavon Theatre, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and beyond. After years of acclaimed live performances, the big band released its long-awaited debut, Emergence, in 2009. It's a multifaceted affair with detailed liner notes by the Gallery's co-founder Dale Fitzgerald and featuring music by Roy, Frank Lacy, Chucho Valdes and more. "The sound is so full and rich," says Roy of the big band idiom, "and it provides opportunity for congregation, which is much needed among today's younger musicians."
