Glenn Patscha will be collaborating on this very special pairing with Elysian Fields.
Glen,Member of Ollabelle.Has recently recorded with Ryan Adams, Willie Nelson, Levon Helm, Lizz Wright, The Holmes Brothers, Roger Waters, and many others.
“Like a submarine on a sexy secret mission, noir rock legends Elysian Fields have always travelled below the radar,” says their MySpace page. But this only begins to describe the beautiful and mysterious music that is the band Elysian Fields.
According to their website, band members Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow met “on a dark and stormy night. It was April in downtown New York City. The year was 1990. He wore a beat up shark skin suit, frayed at the cuffs… She was singing some forgotten song from the 1920s, as she dreamily and ineffectively tried to sweep the floor. He stood and watched her, this little anachronistic siren, as he cravenly sucked up the poison of yet another cigarette. Little did they know, but this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
Charles and Bloedow went on to record for Radioactive, putting out an EP “Elysian Fields” as well as Bleed Your Cedar which was highly acclaimed as an extraordinary debut. They have since worked with John Zorn’s label, and later released Queen of the Meadow in 2000, which included the single “Bend Your Mind” that was highly applauded, especially throughout Europe.
Elysian Fields has worked with many talented artists, including super mixer Robbie Adams (U2, Smashing Pumpkins), with whom they produced the 2003 Dreams that Breathe Your Name. Following that record was the 2007 Bum Raps & Love Taps on Naïve’s label.
The latest musical expression The Afterlife is described intricately on their MySpace blog by poet Peter Spagnuolo: “Now that you've eaten your own heart, will you ever taste ambrosia again? Never mind that now—the Afterlife brings you sustenance of a different kind: the bitter palate of true love, as it is lived and endured. Ten new songs from Elysian Fields stir the pot of Romance through all its flavors—from deranging eros to self-less devotion—but it is a menu of cold comforts. There is regret, and there are secrets; there is love that requires surrender and submission, like Baudelaire's surgeon and patient; there is truth and treachery, and yearning that collapses into disillusion; there is love that panders, and great tenderness; and there is ecstasy, but only for tonight.
This bill is guaranteed to deliver a very special night at City Winery.
