HOWARD FISHMAN
Aclaimed singer, guitarist, composer and bandleader Howard Fishman's exuberant, spontaneous, and unvarnished music has made him a favorite of audiences and critics alike. Ever-evolving and increasingly difficult to pin down, Fishman filters a deep passion for New Orleans jazz, gritty pop, fervent gospel and open-hearted country music through a completely original aesthetic to create a sound entirely his own.
Although primarily known as a songwriter, Fishman began his career immersed in early jazz, folk, blues, and country music, creating a bedrock of knowledge of American roots forms that, when applied to his pop, classical and experimental leanings, helped forge the style for which he is known today (and which critics are, universally, at a loss to describe).
PHARAOH'S DAUGHTER
lending a psychedelic sensibility and a pan-Mediterranean sensuality, Basya Schechter leads her band, Pharaoh's Daughter, through Doors-like improvisations, liturgical chants with Middle Eastern, and spiritual stylings filtered through percussion, flute, strings, oud, saz, bass, rhodes and electronica. Their sound has been cultivated by Basyas Hasidic musical background and by trips to the Middle East, Africa, Israel, Egypt, Central Africa, Turkey, Kurdistan and Greece. There she has studied in ethnomusicology centers as well as learning through meeting internationally renknowned folk musicians in cafes, and from street performers, who have taught her songs from their musical heritages. Inspired by world instruments, but also influenced by Western song structure, she began retuning her guitar to sound like a cross between an Arabic oud and a Turkish saz, with harmonic minor melodies, and odd time signatures.
BRAZZ TREE
NYC-based violin/guitar duo Brazz Tree continues to astound and endear audiences across the country with their brand of music: New World Acoustic Rock. Though it draws on traditional forms born in places as far-flung as Ireland and India, their Music remains firmly rooted in the exuberant, questing ethos of the New World.
