City Winery and Canal Room are proud to present Colin Hay, former frontman for Men at Work in the intimate setting of City Winery. This special pair of shows will showcase Hay's talented songwriting.
About Colin Hay
Colin Hay began his career as the singer, guitarist, and main songwriter of Australia's Men at Work and was responsible for penning several of the quirkiest pop hits of the early '80s. Since he was the group's main singer and songwriter, Hay quickly became the focal point of the band, as such humorous videos for "Who Can It Be Now" and "Down Under" pushed the debut album to the top of the U.S. charts -- making Men at Work an overnight sensation.
After the breakup of Men at Work Hay’s solo career blossomed after the 1987 release of Looking For Jack. Although never quite as successful as the Men at Work output, Hay has remained a consistent producer of quality releases, both on Compass and his own imprint Lazy Eye Records. The 90’s saw a slew of releases - 1990's Wayfaring Sons, 1992's Peaks & Valleys, 1994's Topanga, and 1998's Transcendental Highway. His most recent release American Sunshine continues the body of work laid out over the early part of the new century.
A study of his ongoing relationship with California, his now permanent home, American Sunshineshowcases Hay’s nuanced songwriting, from “Pleased to Meet You” to “Oh California” to the title track, Hay is in command. Pastoral and bright, the singer strips it down to just him and his guitar to deliver a blend of melodic rock, country twang and thoughtful musings on life in the sun. Always a lyrical sprite, Hay’s shows are an uplifting and enjoyable way to sing in the spring.
