ABOUT COLIN HAY
Colin Hay began his career as the singer, guitarist, and main songwriter of Australia's Men at Work and was responsible for penning several of the quirkiest pop hits of the early '80s. Since he was the group's main singer and songwriter, Hay quickly became the focal point of the band, as such humorous videos for "Who Can It Be Now" and "Down Under" pushed the debut album to the top of the U.S. charts -- making Men at Work an overnight sensation.
After the breakup of Men at Work Hay’s solo career blossomed after the 1987 release of "Looking For Jack". Hay has remained a consistent producer of quality releases, both on Compass and his own imprint Lazy Eye Records. The 90’s saw a slew of releases - 1990's "Wayfaring Sons", 1992's "Peaks & Valleys", 1994's "Topanga", and 1998's "Transcendental Highway". His most recent release "American Sunshine" continues the body of work laid out over the early part of the new century.
A study of his ongoing relationship with California, his now permanent home, "American Sunshine" showcases Hay’s nuanced songwriting, from “Pleased to Meet You” to “Oh California” to the title track, Hay is in command. Pastoral and bright, the singer strips it down to just him and his guitar to deliver a blend of melodic rock, country twang and thoughtful musings on life in the sun. Always a lyrical sprite, Hay’s shows are an uplifting and enjoyable way to sing in the spring.
ABOUT AMBER RUBARTH
"After winning 1st place in the International Songwriting Contest (judged by Tom Waits), touring Europe 5 times, garnering widespread praise, and boasting over a million and a half listeners on MySpace, Amber Rubarth is poised to conquer the world of folk pop with her wide- eyed, optimistic songs.” -CDBaby.
Take the timelessness of Patsy Cline. Mix in the insatiable curiosity of Socrates. Give it an edge, a roughness, refined in the spirit but raw in the performance, like someone singing in the shower. You'll start to have an idea of what makes AMBER RUBARTH.
At 17 years old, Amber moved to Nevada to become a chainsaw sculptor. Three years later she decided to pursue her number one passion, trading her chainsaw for a guitar. She began touring and immediately people took notice of her unique approach of sculpting stories through song, working her way around and chipping away until the truest form inside beamed to life.
Her fan-funded album “Good Mystery” has attracted widespread praise since its sold out release at New York City’s legendary theater, Joe’s Pub, where it immediately hit #1 on the charts at Amie Street and remained for the following two weeks. Her distinctive blend of nuanced indie folk nabbed her a feature spot on The Huffington Post, a Sun Studio session, and a much-chatted-about performance at SXSW ’09.
NPR tastemaker Bob Boilen featured her on All Songs Considered, proclaiming that he was “attracted to her honesty and humor.” The Boston Globe sums it up, saying “You will leave with a crush on her.” In addition to her rigorous touring and recording schedule, Rubarth also takes part in charity activities such as Musicians on Call. Thank you for listening, I like you a lot.
