"Russia-born/New York-based clarinetist/saxophonist Alex Kontorovich is a phenomenon" (AllAboutJazz-NY)

Hailed an "imaginative, thoughtful improviser" (Jewish Week), Kontorovich recently toured Spain, Germany and Poland with the Grammy Award-winning Klezmatics. He recorded with Frank London's Klezmer Brass All-Stars on "Carnival Conspiracy," named Rolling Stone's #1 Non-English CD of 2006. The Klez Dispensers, which Kontorovich founded as a freshman at Princeton University, received the 2006 Just Plain Folks Award for Best Klezmer Album. Also in 2006, Kontorovich produced the only recording to feature the late Moldavian klezmer master, German Goldenshteyn.

Kontorovich has performed with Fyvush Finkel, Theodore Bikel, Gospel singer Joshua Nelson, ska superstar King Django, Serbian brass legand Boban Markovic, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra at venues such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Lincoln Center in New York, the Royal National Theatre in London, the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow, and the KlezMore Festival in Vienna. He has served on the faculties at KlezKamp, KlezKanada, Yiddish Summer Weimar, Klezmer Festival Fuerth, and the Klezmer Cruise in Ukraine, and is a mathematics professor at Brown University.

In 2007 Kontorovich released Deep Minor, his debut as a leader featuring all of his original compositions. Deemed "an exhilarating blast of fresh, inventive, and inspired music for the 21st century" (JazzReview), Deep Minor owes as much to Bird and Trane as to the "radical Jewish music" of John Zorn and David Krakauer. Receiving a 4-star review in Downbeat Magazine, it was called "one of 2007's best releases" (JazzReview) and "an exhuberant if not groundbreaking slice of downtown klez-jazz" (TimeOutNY).
