ABOUT STARDWELLER
StarDweller is the current alter ego of Stephanie Davila, the former songstress of Americana-band The Winter Blanket. Her songs continue to be born out of necessity—a way to deal with ghosts passed and loves lost. But these new harrowing songs are particularly rife with evidence of sleepless nights and wrestled demons. Her whispery voice and barely-there guitar deliver unsuspecting secrets in the form of hushed lullabies.
A geographical misfit, Davila recently clawed her way out of small-town America and headed to New York City to let her imagination run wild and her inspiration grow rampant. The barebones, swallow-your-pride transparency of greats like Patsy Cline and Leonard Cohen have informed her sound, while her years sharing the stage with acts like Low and M. Ward have influenced her live performance.
ABOUT MATT BAUER
Matt Bauer grew up in Kentucky, and his music is rooted in the sounds and natural surroundings of the region. His melodies and banjo style bear the markings of traditional mountain music, bluegrass and early country, but his sound is distinctly contemporary. The lyrics live unflinchingly in the present and the arrangements draw on influences as varied as gamelan orchestras and post-rock.
His latest record The Island Moved in the Storm, centers around the story of a young woman was found dead along a dirt road near Eagle Creek, north of Georgetown, Kentucky in 1968. For thirty years, she was known only as ‘Tent Girl’, the name given to her by the Kentucky Post & Times Star because she’d been found wrapped in canvas resembling a tent bag. This album is a series of overlapping narratives inspired by her story as re-imagined to incorporate imagery and locales from Bauer’s rural Kentucky upbringing – The places Bauer grew up in were the last places The Tent Girl, Barbara Anne Hackman Taylor, was seen before her disappearance.
Matt Bauer now lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY.
ONLY SON
Only Son:Only Son is the music of NYC-based songwriter Jack Dishel. His debut album, The Drop To The Top (Cassette Recordings), is currently for sale in major US record stores and available for download on iTunes. He spent 2006 on the road opening for both Regina Spektor and Adam Green on their many tours of Europe, the UK and the United States. 2007 has seen Jack on the road with the unstoppable Regina Spektor once again, this time hitting Europe, Israel, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Before creating Only Son, Jack was the frontman of NYC band Stipplicon as well as lead guitarist for The Moldy Peaches. When playing as a full band, Only Son includes Rick Snell on guitar, Shawn Feeney on bass, Jesse Wallace on drums and Jon Natchez/Ryan Smith on keyboards.
LOWELL THOMPSON
Lowell Thompson:Dark winters up North, an encyclopedic knowledge of Americana music mixed with punk rock sensibilities, and a heart easily broken (and re-broken) make for songs that are crushing and redemptive. It’s easy to understand why Burlington, VT’s Lowell Thompson and his band Crown Pilot are getting hailed as the “next big thing” for the alt-country set. It’s hard to find a review that doesn’t include favorable comparisons to the likes of Gram Parsons, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, vintage Rolling Stones, and the various Americana revivalists that used to grace the cover of No Depression. While there’s truth to the hype, the fact is that Thompson’s music is informed as much by the names above as it is by less expected sources like Fugazi and Elvis Costello (when he was much younger and angrier).Thompson’s latest album entitled “Lowell Thompson and Crown Pilot” features contributions by local Vermonter’s like Phish’s Page McConnell, Grace Potter and Son Volt’s Mark Spencer. The record has been garnering positive media attention at home, nationally (including Rolling Stone) and in the press across the Atlantic.
