Happy White T-Shirt Day.
This holiday celebrates the men and women who participated in a general strike at General Motors in 1937. These autoworkers helped the United Auto Workers (UAW) union become the sole bargaining agent for General Motors autoworkers. As part of the symbolism of this strike, everyone wore a white shirt or blouse.
Put on a white shirt, blouse or t-shirt. Make your way to City Winery for dinner, mention White Shirt Day, and we'll pour you a glass of one of our highly regarded City wines, made right here in the heart of Manhattan. With our compliments. Couldn't be simpler.
Fun factoids
One of the earliest prototypes for the T-shirt dates to 1880, when sailors in the U.S. Navy were issued an elbow and hip length undershirt; when laid out on flat surface, it resembled a…perfect "T". Many of America’s favorite heartthrobs have been immortalized in the iconic white cotton T-shirt—from the brooding Marlon Brando, ultra-cool James Dean, and the seductive Elvis Presley, many have placed their imprimatur on this classic garment.
This holiday started out as 'White Shirt Day' but over the years the title turned into White T-Shirt Day for those who didn't know the history of the holiday therefore created their own version of this day, giving birth to the title White T Shirt Day . This holiday mostly celebrates the fun of wearing the ever so popular white t-shirt instead of what it was originally intended to celebrate.
