About Surprise In Texas
Regardless of one's opinion of classical music, this film will absolutely absorb and transport you. Gorgeous cinematography and incredible production values equal a sensory feast. With intriguing characters (and a twist!) this documentary is not only about the nail-biting competition of the Van Cliburn International—it is a celebration of undeniable talent and the power of dedication.
The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition brings together young pianists, from all over the world, to vie for the “most prestigious prize in the piano world.” Spanning a three-week rehearsal and performance schedule, the contest happens once every four years. This film chronicles the event, which was held in Ft. Worth during May-June 2009. A SURPRISE IN TEXAS is much more than the average "documentary about a competition.” While it definitely showcases awe-inspiring talent, it also achieves the rare feat of capturing pure magic on camera.
The viewer comes away reminded how factors such as grueling pressure, cultural differences and even physical barriers cease to matter when heart and sheer determination take over. Every moment of this documentary is beautifully captured. With a fascinating cast of characters and containing quite the surprise (or two...), this elegant gem is a must-see and an inspiration to all those who have to overcome obstacles in life!
