Texan singer/poet Michelle Shocked is a traveler and a troubadour; a "picker-poet," as they say in the the South. Shocked has thus far enjoyed a twenty-three year musical career that has seen critical acclaim at every juncture. She's been labeled as "peer" to other Eastern Texas musicians such as Willie Nelson, Victoria Williams, and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. In the early nineties, she drew unexpected attention to herself by famously eluding major-label indentured servitude, which inevitably incited the current trend toward artistic self supervision. Shocked's musical freedom has allowed her to release more critically-acclaimed albums on her Mighty Sound label, the latest of which is due for release on May 26, 2009.
The anticipated thirteenth album, enigmatically entitled Soul of My Soul, is passionate in every sense of the word. Emotionally charged with both love and anger, Soul evokes Shocked's sentiments concerning her fight to quit drinking as well as her intense disappointment in the Bush administration. In "Other People," Shocked sings to Bush's America, the ugly, war-mongering face of the country she loves. "I love you, America," she says,"but I think we should see other people." Appropriately, Soul of My Soul captures Shocked at her most soulful, in the original, spiritual sense of the term.
