John Medeski hovering over the keys like a mad sonic scientist, Billy Martin mastering the drums, and Chris Wood whomping the bass: the legendary trio is just a stone’s throw away on City Winery’s intimate stage. Coming out of Brooklyn’s D.U.M.B.O., Medeski Martin and Wood have been cementing their title as the world’s most innovative jazz trio since 1991. Playing off one another, weaving hip-hop beats and extreme harmonies, improvising, MMW shows are like snowflakes: no two are the same. The neck-breaking speed at which these tickets sold out is a testament to the obsessive relationship the band has cultivated with jazz aficionados.
MMW had ties to City Winery before it was even built. After releasing their last album with Gramavision in 1996, the band celebrated "Shack-Man" with an 8-week Monday night stint at Michael Dorf’s former baby, Knitting Factory. It seems appropriate that they would perform at his new, more mature venue. Also, a unique aspect of City Winery is its ability to cater to those who wish to create a kosher wine. After signing with Blue Note Records, MMW released the album "Tonic," named for the LES club and former kosher winery. This performance seems to have been written in the stars.
We are especially pleased to play host to these music geniuses as they have all but stopped touring together in order to pursue individual interests. This performance is the last of three in a short New York appearance.
Wait, there’s more. MMW is paired with the one, the only, the legendary Cyro Baptista. A look at the roster of most influential current musicians will give you some sense of who’s been lucky enough to jam with Baptista since he came to the States in 1980. We’re talking Brian Eno, Yo-Yo-Ma, Jay-Z, James Taylor, David Byrne, Herbie Hancock, Sting, Paul Simon and of course, MMW. This Brazilian owns the realm of percussion. As a matter of fact, he is currently redefining it with his band Beat The Donkey. When Baptista plays, he throws in everything but the kitchen sink. He’s been known to play instruments from Brazil, U.S., Africa, Indonesia, and ones that he flat out made himself.
Hold onto the stem of your wine glass. Things are gonna get funky.
