Vineyard description: At high elevation over 3100m lies the Catena family’s flagship La Pyramid vineyard, named for the pyramid shaped Catena winery located above the vineyard. Soils are of fluvial rocky composition formed from millennia of decomposition of the Andes mountains. Days are especially sunny and warm but receive great diurnal flux as cold air comes off the mountains at night. Winemaking Info: Twenty-one day fermentation in tank with pumping over twice a day, and press wine blended back into free-run wine. Full malolactic fermentation. Gravity pumped into a combination of two-year-old French and American barrels for 10 months aging.
Wine Description: An intense youthful, glass staining purple. The wine evolves quickly in the glass from a first quick hint of chocolate bitters and dry lavender, to ripe cherry and October forest floor. There is a barrel note in the nose reminiscent of cinnamon toast bread and maybe spicy cayenne. Palate is decadent with smokiness paired to maple syrup flavors and the finish lingers through firm tannin.
