Downtown Seder 2017 featuring David Broza, Judy Gold & more!
This particular year, the retelling of the story of the ancient Egyptians oppressing a small group of slaves reaffirms our continuity of keeping the vision of Freedom alive, and it has never been more important. The themes within the Passover story of tyrants and governments harboring lethal hatred for outsiders, the liberation struggles, the histories of oppression, bigotry, and racial injustices all are represented in the timeless Passover story. While the tradition of a Passover Seder goes back over 2000 years, our unique artistic interpretive Seder takes a lot of “freedom” in dividing the ancient Haggadah into parts and assign them to various artists, musicians, political thinkers and activists to present in a fluid thought provoking, unique, and fully enjoyable evening.
The room is set with long community tables, food is served, abundant glasses of wine, a customized Haggadah, and the evening is a rare chance to get together in the community celebrating life, while laughing, eating, pondering and being inspired to bring something home a week later to the actual family Passover table.
In the past, we have had everyone from Lou Reed, Dr. Ruth, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, Phillip Glass, Lewis Black, Congressman Al Franken, Matisyahu, Peter Yarrow, and so many more.
So far this year we have confirmed participating David Broza, Judy Gold, Joel Chaznoff, activist Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Vince Warren of the Center for Constitutional Rights, among others.
