The Rhone Rangers started in California in the 1980s with a small group of vintners dedicated to making wines from the grape varieties of one of the great wine regions of the world, France’s Rhone Valley. The Rhone Valley is home to some of France’s (and the world’s) most prestigious and sought-after wines: Hermitage (based on Syrah), Chateauneuf-du-Pape (primarily Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre) and Condrieu (made from 100% Viognier).
Growing these same varieties on California sites with climates similar to the Rhone’s, the early Rhone Rangers began producing world-class wines that quickly drew the attention and praise of influential critics like Robert Parker Jr. The high scores garnered by these wines bred additional interest and success, and the Rhone Rangers now counts 150 members, expanding beyond California to include wineries from Washington, Oregon, Virginia, and other states across the U.S. The common thread is their shared passion and dedication to producing high-quality wines from the 22 grape varieties of France’s Rhone Valley.
The Rhone Rangers have held successful tastings all over the west coast, and now they’re coming to New York for the first-ever Rhone Ranger tasting in the Big Apple. Don’t miss this inaugural event and your chance to taste over 100 wines poured by the owners or winemakers from 30 different Rhone Ranger wineries including Bonny Doon, Ridge Vineyards, Tablas Creek, Qupe, and L’Aventure. You won’t find the same old Chardonnays and Cabernets; instead you’ll be treated to a range of exciting wines from Syrah and Viognier, the up-and-coming Mourvèdre, Grenache and Roussanne, and the more obscure (but delicious) grapes like Counoise and Picpoul Blanc. City Winery’s executive chef Andres Barrera will prepare light appetizers to accompany the wines.
Grand Prize Drawing: All ticket holders may enter a drawing for a two-night stay in Paso Robles, CA at world-class Hotel Cheval, combined with visits to local wineries for tours and tastings.
Scholarship Support: A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to support a new Rhone Rangers – James Beard Foundation Scholarship to be awarded in the spring of 2013 to a food or wine professional for continuing their studies while focusing on American Rhone Wines.
