Brunch Special feat. Diane Garisto
Like Laura Nyro, Diane Garisto grew up in New York City, immersed in its musical soul. So it’s not surprising that she also grew up an avid fan of Nyro, the late, great singer/songwriter who was inducted into the Rock-and- Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Garisto sang on her first recording at the age of eight, and went on to record with Billy Joel, George Benson, Carly Simon, Laurie Anderson, Malcolm McLaren, Nile Rodgers, and other industry notables. She toured extensively with Steely Dan, and had the good fortune to sing on Paul Simon's Grammy Awardwinning Album of the Year, “Graceland.” But what she considers her most meaningful musical experience came in the mid-nineties, when she became a member of Laura Nyro's Harmony Group. As one of Nyro's backing vocalists, she traveled throughout the U.S. and Japan, and also recorded two live albums. Garisto has put together Stoned Soul Picnic, a celebration of the art and soul of Laura Nyro, featuring a band of top-notch New York City musicians and singers — her way, she says, of keeping Nyro's flame burning.
