Based as it is in Santa Cruz, heartland of New Age thinking, it comes as no surprise that Bonny Doon Vineyard has a long and unusual history. Founded in 1983 by Randall Grahm, they are known for their strikingly original wines made from the lesser-known grape varieties. Originally intended to produce Pinot Noir, Bonny Doon Vineyard was unexpectedly pulled into the great California Rhone Paradigm of the 1980's, emerging as the premier Rhone Ranger with their flagship wine Le Cigare Volant. Since the adaptation of biodynamic vineyard practices in 2002, and development of the Ca del Solo estate vineyard, Bonny Doon Vineyard wines evidence a deeper sense of place, more complex varietal character and a noticeable note of minerality. Grahm has become ever more grounded in the creation of world-class wines reflective of their terroir. For the last six years, biodynamic methodologies have been at the heart of Grahm's vinous vision, in which the hands-on crafting of wines of purity and transparency has been the uppermost goal.
