City Winery's "Sohovignon Blanc" is Available for Sale

Posted: 05/08/09

City Winery, New York City's first fully functioning winery in decades announced today that the first finished product from the 2008 harvest is ready for consumption on premise in Manhattan. The first wine is a Sauvingon Blanc which was sourced from California, but has been fermenting in New York City since the harvest in crush in October of last year.

To be called "Sohovingon Blanc", the wine is available for sale by the glass and carafe only at City Winery. The wine is stored in stainless steel tanks in the temperature controlled barrel room at City Winery and using argon gas, kept fresh in a system of pressure up to tap spouts at the bar. This is the only way to consume the product and it will not be sold by the bottle to the public; rather, exclusively sold on-premise without ever going into a bottle.

"We are very excited to not only be presenting a "green" delivery system to customers, but extremely proud of our excellent first wine produced in our new winery. This actually is a number of "firsts"--from our first finished wine to the first new commercially made wine in New York City in decades to the first high-end California fruit to be made in wine in New York to the first wine tap system on the East Coast." --said Michael Dorf, Founder and CEO of City Winery.

As part of the launch, City Winery will be offering a free taste for all lunch goers during the month of May. City Winery will also be offering a limited release as well of a Zinfandel Rose in the middle of May and an Oregon Pinot Noir in early June. City Winery produced 90 tons of grapes in the fall harvest of 2008 and recently produced 6 tons of Malbec from Argentina. More than half of City Winery's production is for private barrel production and private labeling of bottles.
