Once hailed as the "Bruce Springsteen of Country Music," Grammy-nominated American singer-songwriter Steve Earle, is as well known for his political activism as he is for his more than 30 years as an accomplished singer, songwriter and performer. After more than a decade in Nashville as an RCA songwriter and vocalist—including backup vocals with Emmylou Harris on "Desperados Waiting for a Train" — his 1986 debut album "Guitar Town" went Gold, followed by the commercially successful "Exit 0" and "Copperhead Road." Since establishing his own label in the mid-90s, he has experimented with a variety of genres, from bluegrass to folk to hard rock, and has also branched out into poetry, playwriting and acting. He had a recurring role on HBO's hit series "The Wire," hosts a show called "Hardcore Troubadour" on Sirius Satellite Radio, and appeared in the 2008 political documentary "Slacker Uprising." His most recent album, "Washington Square Serenade," was released in 2007, after Earle relocated to New York City.
For this Pairing, Earle will perform with his wife Allison Moorer, a Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter considered one of today's most talented alternative country performers. She has been recording since she was a teenager, releasing eight albums in only a decade, including 2008's cover album "Mockingbird." Her 2002 duet with Kid Rock, "Picture," hit number 4 on Billboard's "Hot 100" singles chart.
Pairings is a unique "blend" at City Winery: an intimate concert series — served with fine wine — that will take place on City Winery's main stage every Thursday evening, starting in January 2009. Each concert will be preceded by an optional tasting or private dinner, followed by personal performances from some of today's most respected musicians. Pairings has been designed especially with City Winery's target audience of cool urban wine sophisticates in mind, and promises to be a stand-out program that draws from City Winery's core rudiments — wine, music and food — to create a holistic cultural evening unlike any other in Manhattan.
